As the chair of the Creation Justice Team, I do not understand why people in general do not seem to prioritize the care of our earth. Do they not consider it important? Church goers are familiar with the term earth “stewardship,” yet is earth care mentioned regularly in service?
In my travels and my time on earth, I have heard many excuses. “I’m too busy.” “I’m just one person.” “I don’t believe there’s any crisis.” In my opinion, it boils down to the general concensus that either someone else will do it, or that it hasn’t affected me [yet].
Do we really have to wait until tragedy strikes closer to home to act? I truly hope this is not the case, but I must admit it’s likely. To answer some of my own questions, I believe all of this results from our lack of connection with nature. Virtual reality has overtaken the natural environment. Being disconnected, we don’t feel responsible for what’s happening. It’s easier that way, right? Yes, until we are faced with even a tougher reality. Think about it.
